Aug 26, 2023

The auspicious festival of Kerala - Onam which is also known as Thiruvonam is peeking around the corner and the excitement among the people of Kerala is just overwhelming. One of the most popular festivals among the Hindus which is glorified as the Festival of Harvest and joy. This year, the Onam festival falls between the 20th and 31st of August marking the offset of monsoon and the onset of the harvest season. People of Kerala consider this auspicious day as the festival of new beginnings for it marks the start of the malayalam year, known as Kolla Varsham

Onam, the festival that holds deep cultural and religious significance is celebrated in grandeur in the state of Kerala. Some of the key traditions followed as part of the Onam festival celebration are hosting grand processions, boat races, traditional folk dance such as the ‘Kathakali’, sketching out wonderful Pookalam, and of course preparing the drooling feast, ‘the Sadhya’! Another amazing tradition followed by the women in Kerala is wearing Onam sarees, popularly known as the ‘kasavu sarees’ on this day.

Love for the ONAM outfit..!

Onam Sarees are traditional Indian sarees loved by Malayalis, worn during their special occasions. The Onam sarees hold a pivotal significance in the cultural heritage of Kerala for over centuries now. These sarees are typically white, off-white or cream coloured with golden zari borders. The colour white symbolises purity & peace and the golden zari represents prosperity and richness. It is believed that Lord Vishnu visits Kerala during this festival season and hence, women adorn themselves in these beautiful sarees to delight the Lord and receive his blessings.

Nowadays, not only in Kerala, but all across India, women are fascinated by Onam sarees. Women all across the country are obsessed with wearing these sarees during Onam. People usually prefer kasavu sarees & mundu, but now with the emerging trends, people also buy silk, silk cotton and cotton sarees in white or cream. Young women wear pattu pavadai, kurtis and salwar suits in white with golden zari borders.
