Khadi is a hand spun and hand woven natural fibre clothing material. Khadi sarees are usually made from cotton and also from silk or wool. Fibres are spun into yarn using a spinning wheel called Charkha. Promoted strongly by Mahatma Gandhi during Indian freedom struggle, Khadi is cool in summer and warm in winter. Highly regarded in fashion circles, it is used to make Saris, Kurtas and Dhotis.
