Story

Uppada

Uppada is a small coastal town in Andhra Pradesh that is located about 40 kms from Kakinada.  Over the last 40 to 50 years, the town has gained immense popularity for its fine saris woven in Silk & cotton.

These delicate, light weight & diaphanous silk saris are one of the most expensive in the world.  It is one of the few Indian Sari types that has a permanent exhibit in the Victoria Albert Museum in London.

Uppada saris are woven on a traditional pit loom and take anywhere between 2 to 4 weeks to weave.

Uppadas are one of the most time and labour intensive weaving traditions, and the saris are woven with tapestry like patterns of paisleys, flowers, leaves, creepers and geometric designs.

Uppada Pattu Cheerala… as Uppada Saris are popularly known has the protective GI Status, which recognizes its origin.  Contemporary sari wearers looking for a subtler aesthetic & lighter silks have started choosing Uppadas over other heavier silk saris.  The contemporary colour palette, delicate patterns woven in thread & zari & lighter drape have made Uppada a modern treasure
