Maheshwari
Maheshwari Saris are made in the ancient town of Maheshwar and have a history dating back to 1500 years. The weaving tradition in the town prospered under the patronage of Maharani Ahiyabai Holkar who ruled the state of Indore between 1765 to 1795.
The Maheshwari Sari which is known for its geometric motifs is known for its understated elegance and its characteristic airy, light-weight quality. Most Maheshwari Saris have a reversible border, so they can be worn on both side. They also have a unique pallu with five stripes – two white and three coloured.
The Saris are plain or they have stripes or checks with geometric motifs on the borders. The zig zag weave border which is typical of Maheswari Saris is also referred to as the “Narmada Lehar” by Locals
Maheswari saris are made in Silk, Silk Cotton & Cotton. They are also sold as plain saris and block printed saris. Weavers are also creating dress materials & furnishings using the Maheswari Fabric to increase its global reach
